January 29-30, 2016 join the 45th Annual 10th District Snowmobile Rally
History of the Snowmobile Rally
Membership is the lifeblood of the American Legion and being sure that all of our members have their dues paid in time for the upcoming year is very important and a priority in our Posts/Units/Squadrons. Membership becomes delinquent at the American Legion National Organization if it is not paid by Jan. 31, the dead of winter in Minnesota.
The 10th District Snowmobile Rally was started in 1971 by a group of Legionnaires from Blaine Post #566 (now known as Lino Lakes Post #566). This group of Legionnaires were known to work hard and play hard. They put their heads together to come up with a fun way to collect membership throughout the 10th District- do it by traveling from Legion Post to Legion Post on snowmobile!
Snowmobiling was an activity they all enjoyed as young veterans. Getting out and visiting other Posts sounded like a bunch of fun, and having face to face contact with fellow Legion Family members and making new friendships were a bonus. They organized 5 different snowmobile routes that went in all directions in the 10th District. By having 5 different routes, they could stop at nearly every Post in the District and those they could not stop at, were close enough to another Post where a team would make a stop.
The first Snowmobile Rally was a huge success. Membership turn in numbers were great and a tradition had been started. Each year since, on the last full weekend of January, we are out there collecting membership and having fun while doing it. For 25- 30 years, all 5 of these teams were led by Legionnaires from Post 566. As the original founders aged they had to give up the traveling on the Snowmobile Rally and we have since turned to volunteers in the 10th District to help Post #566 keep the legacy alive. Members of the District were willing and anxious to help out and continue to help today.
2016 will celebrate the 45th Year of the Annual 10th District Snowmobile Rally, thanks to those who volunteer a weekend of their time to collect membership for the American Legion Family. Most travel by automobile now due to too many city ordinances on snowmobiling in city limits, but rest assured, we always have a few sleds that meet us along the way.
We are a dedicated group of volunteers that have vowed to keep the Annual 10th District Snowmobile Rally as part of our District hopefully for many years to come!
